Sharrow Vale Road: Where the artisan thrives

Sharrow Vale is a bustling community of authentic and independent businesses. You only need to stroll down the road to realise how passionate the traders are about what they do.

In October's issue of Now Then we brought together ten of Sharrow Vale's independents to share a double-page spread, so to thank them for helping to make the magazine happen, we're showing them some extra love.

JH Mann

From plaice to prawns, skate to sea bass, JH Mann is a Sharrow Vale mainstay and for good reason. Their fresh fish is amongst the finest in Sheffield and they're renowned for their specialist knowledge and friendly service. They recently hooked up with Dead Donkey Bar and Starmore Boss for an oysters, ale and wine evening, so keep your eyes peeled for their next collaboration. And if you're in town, be sure to pop into Kommune and sample their extensive menu of fish dishes.

Porter Book Shop

Many a happy hour can be spent perusing the nooks and crannies of the much-loved Porter Book Shop. Jam-packed with second-hand books at first-rate prices, you're sure to find something that takes your eye. New stock is added regularly so pop in often to find out what new treasures are on the shelves. As Harold J Laski said, "A town without a good bookseller is like a body without a soul."

StarmoreBoss

This boutique off-licence stocks a bountiful selection of wine, whisky, spirits and beers. Whether you're searching for a tipple to go with dinner or a special gift for a loved one, StarmoreBoss's knowledgeable staff are sure to give you tip-top advice. From small-batch artisan gins and bespoke rums, to seasonal beers and quality wines, there's something for every taste and every occasion. They also run popular tasting events, so keep an eye on their calendar.

Two Steps

It's not unusual to see folks queueing out the door of Two Steps. People rhapsodise about the quality of their fish and chips, often calling it 'The best chippy around'. And they're not wrong. This place is an institution, a destination for those who are just in the mood for a nice bit of traditional British fayre. There are no bells and whistles, just fantastic quality food, done right. If you do happen to find yourself at the back of the queue, it's definitely worth the wait.

Oliver's

This contemporary bistro serves up a tasty range of gourmet salads and sandwiches, along with small plates and larger bites. Menu highlights include seafood paella and blueberry and frangipane tart. They also pride themselves on sourcing their ingredients from local, independent traders. Expect beautifully presented dishes and friendly service.

Bilash Tandoori House

First firing up their ovens in 1986, this much-loved tandoori house has an extensive offer of authentic, succulent meat and fish dishes, but their real strength is their specialism in vegetarian delights that you won't find anywhere else in the area. In fact, their vegetarian menu is larger than their meat one. Now offering a delivery service, you needn't even leave the comfort of your sofa and slippers to get a real taste of India.

Sebastian's

Named after one of the younger members of the team, this family-run kitchen and cakery, with its warm and welcoming interior, is the perfect spot to while away time with friends. Their menu changes with the seasons and boasts brunch, sandwiches, soups, stews and salads, with a clear focus on homemade, wholesome food. And their selection of cakes and sweet treats are a feast for the eyes too. Pop in and see for yourselves.

Solo Gallery

Nestled just opposite The Porter Cottage pub and run by Lorna with help from her feline comrade, Solo Gallery is a treasure trove of pottery, textiles, sculpture, jewellery and cards, all created by talented creative folk in their sheds, studios and spare rooms from all over the UK and here in Sheff. Perfect for picking up unique gifts and collectables.

Silk Road Gallery

Silk Road's colourful gallery space is adorned with a stunning collection of vintage textiles, furnishings, gifts and photographs from Nepal, India, Afghanistan and Tibet. Run by Peter Bennion and Kay Wallace, the gallery represents their enduring passion for all the wonders that the lands of The Silk Road have to offer. Their philosophy is always to search for what is handmade, beautiful and unusual, and their expertly curated gallery is a testament to this.

Made by Jonty

A longstanding Sharrow Vale favourite, Jonty's comes highly recommended by Sheffield folk. With plenty of veggie and gluten-free options and a mouthwatering all-day breakfast menu featuring everything from eggs royale and Belgian waffles, to cheese on toast and The Full Jonty, you're sure to find something to satisfy even the greatest hunger. And their freshly made cakes and bakes are perfect if you're in the mood for a sweet treat.
