Pub Scrawl: Ten Artists, Ten Pubs
Jonathan Wilkinson is a painter, illustrator and graphic designer whose work focuses on urban landscapes and local architectural landmarks. Graduating from Sheffield Hallam with a BA Honours in Painting and Printmaking in 2001, he set up an online shop called We Live Here in 2007, inspired by Sheffield’s brutalist architecture and the destruction of the Tinsley Towers. More recently, Jonathan has shown his work at A Month of Sundays, Sheffield Children's Hospital and the recent Printing Sheffield exhibition at the Millennium Gallery.

As far as Sheffield-based printmakers go, James Green comes top of the list. Moving to Sheffield from Birmingham in 1992 to study fine art, he found his feet as an artist in 2003 when he discovered linocut printmaking and hasn’t looked back since. Outside his extensive personal work, which explores urban and pastoral scenes alike, James has created commissions for The Hepworth Wakefield, The Folk Forest, Domino Records and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, as well as heading up local folk band Big Eyes Family Players.

|Painter, printmaker, filmmaker, animator, muralist, interior designer – there aren’t many modes of expression Jo Peel hasn’t tried since striking out as an artist in 2008. Born in Sheffield and holding a degree in illustration, Jo’s work explores cities in transit, old and new elements set side by side to illustrate regeneration and change. Jo is a hands-on artist, hosting numerous workshops and activities, one of which recently culminated in a mural at Hunters Bar Infants School about the process of steel manufacturing and a short animated film about its creation.

|Studio Binky is an independent creative agency based in Sheffield producing ideas-led work in many fields, including graphic design, illustration, animation and visual identity. Established in 2008 by creative director Lydia Lapinski, formally of The Designer’s Republic and Iris Associates, Studio Binky creates all kinds of bright and colourful work for a variety of clients and organisations, from CBeebies and Folksy to Penguin Books and Moshi Monsters. In case you were wondering, a binky is “a sideways flip a rabbit does when feeling free and happy”.

|We can’t think of a better way of incorporating music into Pub Scrawl for the first time than with this event. Formed in Sheffield in 2001, 65days are an instrumental rock band with an ever-loyal following in the city, but are also apparently very popular in Japan and Australia. We don’t know what this event will entail, but in light of their outspoken passion for film and last year’s 16 speaker Sleepwalk City audio-visual installation at the Millennium Gallery, expect something loud and visceral.

|In The Nursery are one of Sheffield’s longest running bands. Formed in 1981, ITN have released over 20 albums and numerous soundtracks. Anthony Bennett is a multi-disciplinary artist best known for his sculpture work. Widely recognised for his longstanding collaboration with artist Yinka Shonibare, Anthony is currently creating a signature sculpture to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the National Fairground Archive.

|What can we say about Tom J Newell and Nick Deakin, both past Now Then featured artists? Tom’s distinctive, intricate illustration work continues to pop up all over the city, from prints and album covers to zines and large-scale murals. Nick’s art is often centred around creative use of typography and digital illustration, while he has worked successfully as an independent designer for over ten years. This will be a fruitful collaboration. Our pick of the scrawl.

|Led by Nick Bax, Human Studio is perhaps the best known creative agency in Sheffield, working with internationally known clients across all major sectors, including music, fashion, business and education. From CGI animations to graphic design, Human Studio offers the full package from its office at Park Hill. The current team is Nick Bax, Dan Fleetwood, Chris Hadfield, David Jackson, Michaela Mckone, Abby Hambleton and Amey Bax.

|Once again, another first for Pub Scrawl as it welcomes photographer India Hobson to the fold. India’s work spans portrait series, fashion shoots and documentary work, aiming to reveal inner workings and unfamiliar techniques. She has collaborated with Opera North, Sheffield Hallam University and local band The Crookes, as well as doing editorial work for Vogue and the Sunday Telegraph. Her website is a catalogue of fine and varied work, as we suspect this exhibition will be.

|Pete McKee is one of Sheffield’s best loved artists. Starting out as a cartoonist for the Sheffield Telegraph and the Sheffield Wednesday Fanzine, Pete’s accomplishments as an artist are too numerous to list. His bold and distinctive style has become intrinsically linked with the identity of the city he has called home for his entire life, as evidenced by the incredible popularity of Now Then #50, which featured his work. It’s always a pleasure to see new work from Pete, so this one is a must.
