Liz West Colour Field: Liz West Retrospective

165 1541002898

From 13 October until 22 December, The Civic in Barnsley will host a gloriously colourful retrospective of colour field artist and Barnsley native, Liz West. The Colour Field exhibition will be the first major retrospective of West's work and will feature both installation and sculpture.

As well as a newly-commissioned site-specific work, the exhibition will include Our Spectral Vision, which was originally commissioned by the Natural History Museum, and Our Colour Wheel, a project exploring how people from a variety of backgrounds and professions perceive colour.

West is renowned for taking a research-based approach to her work and investigating the way we see colour, with the purpose of creating art which makes her findings tangible. Just a quick scroll through her Instagram reveals a selection of vibrant installations which will you to look at them just that little bit longer. Luminous colour and brilliant light are recurrent throughout her work and this upcoming exhibition will undoubtedly be a feast for the eyes as you're invited to explore your relationships with colour.

Liz has said of her exhibition: "I feel honoured to be bringing a selection of my recent work to Barnsley, a place I am very fond of. The Civic gave me one of my first exhibition opportunities after I graduated by including my work in the Northern Futures Awards in 2010."

The exhibition will be accompanied by a selection of Joan Mir prints. It's free admission and The Civic is open every Tuesday to Saturday from 10am 'til 5pm. Enjoy.
