People in Sheffield who are having difficulty paying for food and other essentials due to Covid-19 can apply for support from Sheffield City Council through its Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Grants scheme.

The money, which has come from central government, could help residents fill the gap left by a loss of income or a rise in personal or family costs during the pandemic.

According to the Council, the personal payments can be used to cover:

  • food and housekeeping (groceries, toiletries, baby essentials, etc)
  • essential travel costs (job hunting, starting a new job, medical appointments, etc)
  • telephone and broadband (mobile phones, top-ups, broadband charge, etc)
  • gas and electricity
  • clothing, including school uniforms
  • essential furniture and white goods
  • rent in advance - if you are under immediate threat of eviction due to Covid-19 and your landlord agrees to stop the eviction if the Council pay some or all of your arrears
  • mortgage arrears that you can prove are because of Covid-19

The grants can't be used for paying off loans, or to cover the cost of statutory services that the Council or another public-sector organisation is responsible for.

Sheffielders can apply for the fund online, with support with filling out the form available from the Council by calling 0114 273 4567.

The Council's website also lists other ways that people can get support due to the impact of coronavirus, including help with bereavement, shopping and medication, social contact, food, homelessness and more.
