Freshly baked: Best Boy Bagels

From one of the minds behind Deckards, Best Boy will be "slinging freshly-baked, hand-rolled bagels by day" and bao buns by night when it opens on Chesterfield Road early this year. Dec Stafford filled us in on the details, including their crowdfunder.

Best Boy Bagels

If you're a fan of fresh bagels with imaginative fillings, look out for Best Boy Bagels coming soon to Chesterfield Road. We spoke to Dec Stafford to find out more about their exciting plans to bring bagels and bao buns to the people of Sheffield, from the shop unit formerly occupied by Two Doors Down sandwich shop.

Tell us more about Best Boy bagels.

Best Boy Bagels is a new concept from one of the minds behind Deckards, formerly at Barrowboy bar on Abbeydale Road.

The aim is to be slinging freshly-baked, hand-rolled bagels by day and bao buns in the evening. The shop will be a base where we can showcase our variety of delicious homemade foods, such as pickles and sauces.

We’ve set up a crowdfunder to help kit out the new shop. We didn’t want to just ask for money as we know times are difficult at the moment, so we’ve got loads of rewards and incentives. These include tote bags, t-shirts, gift vouchers and various collaborations and takeovers across the city. These will be with Dead Donkey, Jailbird and Neepsend Social Club, to name a few. Each venue will have an exciting bespoke menu.

What can people look forward to from the menu?

We want to aim to make everything from scratch and for it to be fresh. We'll be making bagels daily and sourcing local ingredients for our ferments and sauces. The menu, aside from a few core staples, will be constantly changing. We want to keep it interesting, seasonal – and fun, ya know.

For anyone new to bagels, what would you recommend they try first?

I’d recommend trying either the salt beef with house sauerkraut, pickles and mustard, or the classic bacon, egg and cheese on an 'everything' bagel, of course.

A great bagel is all down to the baking process and I think we have got it nailed down. You need a strong foundation, like all things in life.

Where are your favourite bagel places?

UK wise we have Steamhouse, Primo bagels, and it would be sacrilege if I didn’t mention Brick Lane Beigel in the big smoke. These are all heavy hitters who have perfected the craft. If we can compare to these guys, I’ll be happy.

Stateside I’ve yet to visit but I’m dying to hit up Frankels, Courage Bagels and Yeastie Boys. The fillings and bake all look sublime and I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from them.
