Django Django Glowing in the Dark

Hearing that Django Django were releasing a new album felt like a little sparkle of joy amid a stagnant start to 2021. As one of my favourite genuinely feel-good bands, I was excited to hear what they had come up with to take our minds off everything else going on at the minute.

Released: 12 February 2021
Glowing in the Dark

With a thirteen-track album, the band have taken the opportunity to showcase their wide range of eclectic sounds. While some of the tracks feel more familiar and reminiscent of their earlier work, we hear them take a brand-new direction with others. What ties everything together, aside from the instantly recognisable vocals, are themes of escape, cementing Glowing in the Dark as a perfect soundtrack to our year.

It’s tough to pick out highlights as there are so many different directions and all of them are great. The opening track ‘Spirals’ kicks the record off with a powerful and elegant electronic style, while ‘Got Me Worried’ holds true to the surf-rock vibes of 2012’s self-titled debut. ‘Waking Up’, which features Charlotte Gainsbourg, has a really laid-back sound, almost as if it belongs on a film soundtrack, and it’s complemented by the softer vocals that Gainsbourg brings. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re likely to find it somewhere along the way.

Glowing in the Dark is upbeat, optimistic and will have you itching to get out and experience real-life music. I’m keeping everything crossed that we’ll be able to see the album toured in the not-too-distant-future – as soon as it’s safe to do so, of course. +
