ASSIST Sheffield - Communications Volunteer

ASSIST is committed to raising the profile of asylum destitution and giving a voice to people with lived experience of the asylum system, this includes in the press, on our website, via social media and at events.

Tasks:

  • Produce regular new and interesting content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, the ASSIST website and supporter newsletters.
  • Produce printed media, leaflets, posters and banners.
  • Ensure all communications are consistent with ASSIST’s key messages and are representative of activity across the organisation.
  • Attend regular meetings with the Community & Fundraising team.
  • Check and edit content, in order to ensure good quality and appropriateness of style for the audience
  • Develop the tools ASSIST uses for communications

ASSIST Sheffield - Welcome & Provisions

Members of the Welfare & Provisions Team provide crucial support at our Weekly Welfare Sessions, which are one-stop sessions where ASSIST clients come to collect money, bus passes, toiletries, essential provisions and access urgent casework support.

Tasks:

  • Welcome clients and facilitate access to different stations within welfare payment stations in a Covid-safe way. Ensure appropriate signposting is in place so clients know how to navigate the building and rooms.
  • Set up a refreshments stations and administer drinks to clients throughout the session in a Covid-safe way.
  • To present the essential provisions in an attractive fashion, accessible to people whose first language isn't English.
  • To keep a record of items that have run out and feed that information back to the staff team in a timely manner.
  • Obtain via external partners and networks essential supplies such as toiletries, PPE, towels and other essential items as requested by clients.
  • Set up and present the items in a welcoming manner and help with the packing away of the session.
  • Build partnerships with other agencies to increase access to low cost food, free clothing, toiletries and other essential items.
  • Chat to and engage with clients as they wait to see other members of the Welfare Team.
  • Share and distribute information to clients regarding social and cultural opportunities - as provided by the Client Support Managers / Welfare Sessions Team.
  • Maintain a tidy and organised store of provisions and replenish when stocks are running low.
  • Communicate your availability in a timely manner and fill in the team rota

ASSIST Sheffield - 'Know Your Rights' Workshop Coordinator

The ASSIST Client Support Service provides crucial support for clients’ health, housing, financial and immigration needs.

We are looking for volunteers to develop a series of “Know Your Rights” workshops for ASSIST clients. The workshops will aim to increase clients’ knowledge of the asylum system and confidence to make decisions about their situation.

We are actively recruiting a diverse team of volunteers, from a broad range of backgrounds and life experiences.

Tasks:

  • Finding workshop hosts
  • Co-curating the workshop programme with the Client Support Managers
  • Logistics - booking venues etc
  • Communicating the workshops to clients
  • Supporting clients to attend
  • Budget management

New Beginnings Project - Jobs Club Volunteer Assistant

Based in Sheffield Volunteer Centre at VAS, the New Beginnings Project helps refugees and asylum seekers to gain the benefits of volunteering, education and employment.

The volunteer role will mainly be carried out at the City of Sanctuary in Sheffield at 37-39 Chapel Walk, S1 2PD and will involve some of the following activities:

  • Setting up computers at the beginning of the session, ensuring that all equipment is working and is set up safely without any trip hazards.
  • Welcoming clients to the jobs club and talking to them about how the jobs club runs and what they can do at the jobs club.
  • Registering clients that are new to New Beginnings – taking details and explaining the consent form.
  • Ensuring that all personal / confidential information is stored securely and is not on display through the session.
  • Supporting clients with online application forms, retrieving passwords and setting up online job alerts.

Blue Cross - Gardener

We’re looking for someone with green fingers and an interest in gardening to help us maintain our gardens and outdoor space at our busy site. This role does not involve working directly with the pets in our care, but you will be making a huge contribution by supporting the team and helping to keep the site looking tidy and well-presented.

Tasks:

  • Weeding and tidying
  • Planting
  • Pruning and caring for plants
  • Seasonal tasks such as collecting leaves
  • General maintenance (if appropriate)
  • At some of our sites, you might also be growing vegetables or ragworting

Blue Cross - Pet Foodbank Coordinator

Sick, injured and homeless pets have relied on Blue Cross for help since 1897. Each year, thousands of dogs, cats, small pets and horses turn to the charity’s animal hospitals, clinics and rehoming services for treatment and support.

Our Pet Food Bank Coordinators provide practical support to pet owners during financial crises, by distributing donated pet food via our onsite foodbank. This helps to keep pets in their current homes.

Blue Cross - Small Animal Foster Carer

Sick, injured and homeless pets have relied on Blue Cross for help since 1897. Each year, thousands of dogs, cats, small pets, and horses turn to the Charity’s animal hospitals, clinics and rehoming services for treatment and support.

Our small animal foster volunteers help thousands of small pets each year by providing support, care, and love in a safe and calm setting, helping them on their journey to find new homes. You could be part of this amazing team and directly help the many pets in our care.

Sheffield General Cemetery Trust - Trustee

Sheffield General Cemetery Trust is looking for new trustees to join their small team. We are ideally looking for people with expertise in Human Resources; Health and Safety: Heritage (especially landscape and buildings). However if you have general organisational level experience and are interested in Sheffield General Cemetery, we would also be interested in talking to you.

Trustee meetings are held monthly either on site or online. Trustees can also be involved with other activities and opportunities. Trustee training is available for all Trustees.

Refugee Council - Sewing Club Volunteer

Volunteers will have the opportunity to facilitate a sewing group that reduces isolation by offering refugees the chance to do an activity and socialise.

Specifically, the volunteer role includes:

  • Setting up and supervising the use of sewing machines.
  • Helping the attendees with any issues they might have with their sewing projects or machines.
  • Putting machines away and lightly tidying the space afterwards.
  • Maintaining a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Useful skills and experience:
  • Knowledge and skills with sewing and how to use sewing machines.
  • Knowledge and skills with knitting or crochet.
  • Good communication skills, especially communicating with people with little or no English.
  • Friendly and welcoming manner

Voluntary Action Sheffield - Social Media Volunteer

Want to put your digital and communications skills to good use and develop them further?

As a Social Media Volunteer for Voluntary Action Sheffield (VAS), you'll be creating interesting content for the VAS and Volunteer Centre social media accounts. These include Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.

By sharing stories and promoting events and volunteer roles, you’ll be helping to connect individuals and organisations in Sheffield. You'll be inspiring others to start volunteering and celebrating the positive impact of the voluntary and community sector in the city.

Some experience of using social media is preferred. Training will be provided in using the scheduling tool Hootsuite. This role can be done from home. Ideally, you'll be able to give 3-4 hours a week for this role, with regular support provided via Zoom.
