While it is absolutely damning that any child in this country doesn't have a bed to sleep in, 1 in 9 newborns in Sheffield didn't have a safe place to sleep last year. Now South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard has announced the Beds for Babies scheme, with £2.2 million of funding to guarantee a safe place to sleep for all 0–5-year-olds. Coppard says: "By guaranteeing families who need it access a safe bed, crib, cot or moses basket, we can make a huge difference to education, health and social outcomes later in life as well as reducing the real-life financial pressures facing many families in South Yorkshire right now." |

Feargal Sharkey (yes, that one) spoke in Ilkley last week about river health, making a call to "stop raw sewage from being discharged into the river and stop local residents paying twice while Yorkshire Water continues to increase profit", according to Yorkshire Bylines. Brian McHugh reports that Sharkey was supporting the Ilkley Clean River Group following a Rivers Trust report that declared that "our rivers are in a desperate state." |
