7 wheelchair-accessible indie cafés in Sheffield for International Tea Day

Whether it’s a comforting mug of Yorkshire Tea or fragrant Earl Grey in a china cup, 84% of Brits enjoy a cup of tea. And now that we can finally go back to cafés, let somebody else put the kettle on for you this Friday for International Tea Day.

I can’t be the only person who has a pot to wake up in the morning, a mug in the afternoon purely for pleasure and a cup of decaf to wind down before bed - plus the extras in between. But it’s not just those earthy flavours and comforting aromas that tea drinkers can appreciate, as your favourite cuppa can have a wide range of health benefits including improved gut health, lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels.

We’ve found seven wheelchair-accessible, independent cafés in Sheffield that will be open for indoor service on International Tea Day on 21 May.

Wildwood Sheffield’s Coffee Shop

Wildwood is a forest-themed coffee shop with a roof canopy of plants and three trees, bringing the outside in whatever the weather. They specialise in home-made brunches - breakfast burritos, French Toast, crepes, build your own subs and salads - and afternoon teas.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

In the spring and summer, I’d particularly recommend our afternoon teas or posh toast topped with smoked salmon, lemon soft cheese, rocket and balsamic glaze, teamed up with a Virunga Earl Grey, one of our six Birchall Speciality Teas.

How do you feel about opening back up?

We can’t wait to welcome customers back inside! Whilst we have done takeaway for some of lockdown, Wildwood is about the whole customer experience and being able to enjoy our relaxed, forest vibe and attached gift shop. It’s been far too long!

The Treehouse Board Game Café

The Treehouse describes itself as a place for people of all ages to have fun together around a table. Their menu of homemade and locally-sourced food and drink is the perfect accompaniment to a session exploring their library of over 650 board games.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

One classic Treehouse combo is a pot of Yorkshire Tea with a Seven Hills Bakery Valrhona chocolate brownie, although you also can't go wrong with a pint of local craft beer and a grilled cheese sandwich.

How do you feel about opening back up?

We are outrageously excited about opening up as a board game café again! Running as a board game shop and game rental service during lockdown has kept us going, but we've really missed the atmosphere when the café is full of people enjoying themselves and we can't wait to experience it again.

Rainbow Café

Rainbow Café is 'the café in the florist', a relaxed and chilled environment surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants. Rainbow Café serves great coffee, superb cakes and fabulous food.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

We would recommend our cooked breakfast with locally-sourced bacon and sausage, served with a mug of Yorkshire Tea.

How do you feel about opening back up?

Opening back up to indoor eating customers will seem strange at first, but we are looking forward to the hum of conversation and seeing all our regular customers again, as well as getting back to some sort of normality.

South Street Kitchen

South Street Kitchen is an independent café set in iconic Park Hill serving Middle Eastern influenced vegetarian and vegan food for brunch, lunch and, on Friday and Saturday evenings, a special mezze menu inspired by seasonal local produce.

They are fully licensed, serving up signature cocktails, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, craft beers and a range of wines and also host parties, weddings and dinner gatherings.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

Our favourite tea is Prana Chai, a comforting tea that’s not too spicy and not too sweet, a combination of whole spices and honey. It is the perfect accompaniment to a favourite dish - a South Street Hummus plate, which includes homemade hummus, fresh falafel (crunchy on the outside moist on the inside), tahini dressing, salad shirazi, vibrant pickles, za’atar flatbread and our spicy red pepper and pumpkin seed muhammara.

How do you feel about opening back up?

We love our inside space so we are very excited to share it again. The transition period behind the scenes of changing from takeaway to serving outside and then opening up to inside dining has been stressful but we hope that we now can happily remain fully open and enjoy welcoming customers through the door and hosting indoor events again in the not-so-distant future!

JAMS

JAMS provides excellent homemade food at affordable prices and everyone is served with a smile. They provide a friendly and relaxed environment for friends and groups to meet and are also dog friendly, so your four-legged friends can join in the fun.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

We serve a beautiful afternoon cream tea, available for takeaway and to eat in, served with Yorkshire Tea, English Breakfast tea, Earl Grey or one of a selection of fruit teas.

How do you feel about opening back up?

We can’t wait to welcome our wonderful customers back into the café again. We’ve missed the chatter in a busy café and it’ll be great to see the regular faces again.

Spoon

Spoon is a local café for local people, serving (nearly) everything homemade, from sourdough to fish fingers, ketchups to black pudding.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

There are many popular dishes but at the moment a firm favourite is Yorkshire halloumi, avocado and homemade chilli jam ,served on freshly baked sourdough toast, topped with rocket and basil dressing and our own chai tea.

How do you feel about opening back up?

We are very excited to be reopening properly so we can bring the atmosphere back to what has been a very sombre building for the last few months. We are keen to welcome back the old and also encourage the new.

Clarrie's Kitchen

Clarrie’s Kitchen is an independent café located on Ecclesall Road, close to Endcliffe Park, which serves homemade cakes, brunch and locally-roasted coffee.

What from your menu would you most recommend?

Our most popular dish is definitely the veggie breakfast - griddle halloumi, poached eggs, beans, mushrooms, sautéed spinach, roasted cherry vine tomatoes and toasted sourdough. Of course accompanied by a pot of proper Yorkshire Tea!

How do you feel about opening back up?

After opening during a pandemic and overcoming various tiers and lockdowns, we are beyond excited to finally be reopening!
