Pecha Kucha

4 September
Millennium Gallery

Since its inception a few years back, Pecha Kucha Sheffield has only grown in strength and popularity. It means ‘chit chat’ in Japanese and is based around a 20x20 format, with speakers providing 20 slides, set to automatically advance every 20 seconds. The result is a quick-fire, sometimes anarchic, always entertaining showcase of the speaker’s work or an exploration of their chosen topic.

Jonny, Pennie and the team have so far run 14 Pecha Kucha events at 13 venues across the city, but are far from done. Vol #15, ‘Mightier than the Sword’, is an exploration of that humble scribbling tool that connects brain to paper. Quite rightly noting that, despite every technological advancement under the sun, there is nothing as direct as expressing yourself with pen or pencil, the organisers will bring together a line up of to-be-confirmed speakers to celebrate Museum Sheffield’s Drawing The Summer initiative, which aims to get Sheffielders sketching with workshops, events and pop-up art exhibitions.

Pecha Kucha is always an entertaining evening, and comes particularly recommended if you have an interest in the creative, digital and business communities in Sheffield. Follow the links.

Now Then Discounts App

Launching September 2014

Everything we do as a magazine and as a company is centred around independence and self-sufficiency. We want to encourage the best bits of the city to grow and thrive on their own terms. Sheffield is at a crossroads that other big cities passed a long time ago, so it’s absolutely crucial that we start to actively make it into a place we are proud of, rather than going with the tidal flow of chain pubs and multiplex cinemas.

We have been championing independent trade for six years now, so it felt like the right time to step up a gear. The Now Then Discounts App is all about supporting and promoting independent businesses in Sheffield with a view to encouraging more people to make shopping locally an everyday choice. Developed by the lovely people at Pipe & Piper, the app will be available for free for Android and iOS in September, and will act as a directory of local independents, their vital statistics and featured discounts. Users can browse by trader or offer, or explore a labelled map of the city.

So far we have signed up over 100 traders, including the Showroom Cinema, the Plug, Corporation, Devonshire Cat, Shakespeares, Mirage E-Cigarettes, Rare and Racy, Record Collector, the Milestone, Emmaus, JH Mann, Sharrow Marrow, Cubana, Balance, Yorkshire Tee, Leadmill, Starmore Boss, Knuf, Grounded Coffee and Vintedge.

Download and install the app from 1 September from Google Play and the Apple Store.
