A Magazine for Sheffield

Our pick of the bunch.

615 London Road.
0114 2551500.

One of our favoured Sheffield drinking establishments the White Lion has this month increased its programme of free entry live music. 2014 now brings you live bands on Fridays as well as Thursdays and Saturdays, so if you’re in the mood for something live over a pint of ale and a pork pie then get yourself down there.

The White Lion hosts jazz nights, quiz nights, rock nights and folk and blues nights, alongside a cosy atmosphere, a lovely outside drinking area and a superb selection of whiskies, beers and ales. A lovely winter hub for friends. Link

Good Morning Rave.

15th January / Hype Dance.

The concept is simple. You set your mid-week alarm and rise as usual, putting the kettle on as you wipe the sleep from your eyes. Only instead of heading to your place of work, you make a detour. You’ve heard of a nightclub. Well, how about a morningclub?

Good Morning Rave runs from 7am till 10am on a Wednesday morning at Hype Dance on Earl Street, behind the new fire station. It’s a fiver in (or whatever you can afford) and the venue is child-friendly. Listen to some good tunes then head your separate ways. Sound invigorating. Link

Cosmos.

A Personal Voyage.

Cosmos is a science documentary series written and presented by astronomer Carl Sagan which aired in 1980. For ten years it was the most widely watched series in the US, and with good reason. Sagan’s grandfatherly wisdom is inspiring, with subjects as diverse as astronomy, philosophy and quantum theory covered across 13 episodes. And the music. Oh, the music.

A follow-up, entitled Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey and presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson, will air in March this year, so get this watched ahead of time if you know what’s good for you. Link
